For most beginners, a compatible 2x Barlow is the sensible place to start. It expands an eyepiece collection without immediately pushing a telescope to magnifications that the atmosphere or mount cannot support. A 3x model is more specialized, especially when a long-focal-length telescope already gives high power.
These choices are based on current manufacturer descriptions and practical compatibility, not side-by-side optical testing. The right choice may also be to buy no Barlow: if your existing eyepieces already cover useful powers, another accessory will not create more detail.

Start with the magnification calculation
Visual magnification is the telescope’s focal length divided by the eyepiece’s focal length. A 1,000 mm telescope with a 10 mm eyepiece gives 100x; adding a nominal 2x Barlow gives about 200x. That calculation describes image scale, not the amount of detail you will see. A shaky mount, poor focus or unsteady air can make the larger view worse.
Write down the powers from your existing eyepieces first. If a 2x Barlow merely duplicates a shorter eyepiece you already like, spend the money elsewhere. For a beginner telescope, a stable mount and comfortable low-power view often matter more than another high-power combination.
Celestron Omni 2x: the simple starting point
The Omni is a 1.25-inch, 2x Barlow intended to increase the magnification of compatible eyepieces. It is worth comparing when you need one general-purpose accessory for lunar and planetary observing. Check that the barrel fits the focuser or diagonal, that the assembled stack seats securely, and that you can still reach focus.

X-Cel LX 2x: compare the whole setup
The X-Cel LX 2x is another 1.25-inch option. Celestron lists filter threads on the barrel, which can be useful when changing eyepieces without moving a compatible filter each time. Choose it based on fit, handling and total cost; a different housing or product tier alone is not proof of a visible improvement in your telescope.

X-Cel LX 3x: a deliberate imaging choice
A 3x Barlow can be useful when a planetary camera needs more image scale, but the camera’s pixel size, telescope focal ratio and conditions must be considered together. Do not buy 3x simply because it is a larger number. Start with a modest configuration and inspect your recorded detail before increasing the effective focal length.

Compatibility checks that prevent disappointment
- Match the barrel diameter: these three options are 1.25-inch models.
- Check available focus travel and clearance inside the diagonal or focuser.
- Account for the combined weight of the Barlow, eyepiece and camera adapter.
- Treat the printed factor as nominal; changes in spacing can change the effective amplification.
- Do not use a Barlow, ordinary filter or eyepiece to make unfiltered solar viewing safe. Solar observation requires a complete, purpose-designed system.
